"The Scream" is one of the world's most recognizable works of art, inspiring everything from graffiti to Hollywood movies. It is also a target for thieves -- two versions of the work have been stolen in recent years.

Among the other high-profile works to go under the hammer in Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art sale is Pablo Picasso's portrait of Dora Maar, "Femme assise dans un fauteuil," which is expected to sell for between $20 and $30 million.
